In the 1970s, photographer Esaias Baitel resided for five years in Aubervilliers, a suburb of Paris. This period culminated in a book and an exhibition that toured globally. Zonen portrays a community where motorcycles, rock and roll, and swastikas coexist. To gain access to these "Rockers," Baitel claimed Swedish Walloon heritage, as revealing his Jewish identity would have been unsafe. The photographs offer an intimate look into an integrated subculture, featuring entire families and young children. While many films and documentaries focus on the challenges immigrants face in France, this work provides a glimpse into the other side, where confrontations are easily imaginable
